Lizard / Pristhasana
Previous / Kneeling Gallery / Next

Aka Uttan or Utthan Pristhasana. Uttan= [here] “stretched upward,” prstha= “hind part.” In other schools, "pristhasana" has been used to name two completely different poses, one a standing backbend, the other the pose here labeled "Rider" (sanchalasana).

Begin in Trishna, knees wide. Lean forward, supported on your hands. Ground your chin and stretch your arms out before you, palms flat. Bend your back, attempting to bring your chest onto the floor, while keeping your butt high.

Variation 1

With chin and chest on the floor, or as close as possible, bring your arms behind your back; hold them straight back; join hands (naddhamudra or “fettered” gesture; or skypointing) and raise the joined hands high.
